DJ Hell, born Helmut Geier in Altenmarkt an der Alz, has been one of the most restless forces in German electronic music since the late 1970s. He mixed New Wave, Ska, Punk, Hip hop and Disco in the same sets long before most DJs had a coherent style, and was one of the first house DJs in Germany, organising the country's first acid house party in Munich in 1987. His 1992 single My Definition of House Music on R&S sold over 100,000 copies and put him on the map as a DJ who could also make records. His real legacy might be International Deejay Gigolos, the Munich label he founded in 1996 that became a launchpad for electroclash and released more than 300 records over two decades. He signed and introduced Fischerspooner to the world, and put out work by Jeff Mills, Miss Kittin and The Hacker, Tiga, Vitalic and Laurent Garnier among many others. His 1998 album Munich Machine is widely credited as a key catalyst for the electroclash movement, and his 2003 New York record NY Muscle, made with collaborators including James Murphy and Alan Vega, showed he could take his sound somewhere darker and more cinematic.
