About
Early James has one of those voices that stops you mid scroll: the New York Times called it "tattered and nervous, with a grainy quaver," and that about covers it. The Alabama singer songwriter draws from a wide well, blues, folk, classic country, grunge, and alt country all show up in his songs, and his lyrics lean dark with a sardonic streak, circling themes of depression, addiction, and love gone sideways. Tom Waits and Fiona Apple are touchstones he openly claims. Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys caught wind of James while he was cutting his teeth in Birmingham and signed on to produce his 2020 debut Singing for My Supper, released on Easy Eye Sound. The follow up, Strange Time To Be Alive, arrived in 2022 and featured Sierra Ferrell on the standout track "Real Lowdown Lonesome." That same year he hit the road for his first headlining tour, enthusiastic enough about it that he wrote a song specifically for the occasion.
