Few bands have committed so fully to a theatrical concept as Ghost. The Swedish heavy metal act built their whole identity around costumed anonymity, with the lead singer playing a character called Papa Emeritus, a skull faced demonic anti pope figure in papal robes, while the rest of the band dressed as hooded Nameless Ghouls. That mystery ran until 2017, when a royalties dispute revealed frontman Tobias Forge as the creative force behind it all. Musically, Ghost blend hard rock, heavy metal, arena rock and pop rock into something that feels simultaneously sinister and catchy. Their 2010 debut Opus Eponymous put them on the map internationally, and they kept building from there. Meliora hit number one in Sweden, the single Cirice won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2016, and their sixth album Skeletá became their first record to top the US Billboard 200. Not bad for a band that started in a basement in Linköping.
