About
Helena Deland made her name with a run of EPs, including a four volume series called "Altogether Unaccompanied" that she split up because the songs ranged so widely in genre. That restless streak carried into her debut album Someone New in 2020, which landed on the Polaris Music Prize longlist and earned a Felix nomination for Anglophone Album of the Year. She writes and sings mostly in English, even though French is just as native to her, and her literature studies shaped how she builds a song. Since then she has kept things moving on a few fronts. Goodnight Summerland, made with Sam Evian and steered in a more acoustic direction, is a tribute to her late mother and works through grief and what comes after. It made the Polaris longlist too. Alongside her solo work she makes electronic music with producer Ouri as Hildegard, whose album Jour 1596 was longlisted for the 2025 Polaris. She also turns up on JPEGMafia's song Free the Frail.
