About
Horsegirl, the Chicago trio of Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece, make the kind of guitar music that sits comfortably between shoegaze haze and sharp indie rock clarity. After signing to Matador Records in 2021, they dropped their debut album Versions of Modern Performance in 2022, building on the buzz from their early single "Billy", which Rolling Stone flagged as one of the Songs You Need to Know. Their 2020 EP also caught serious attention, landing on Paste's list of the 25 best EPs of that year. Their second album, Phonetics On and On, arrived in early 2025, produced by Cate Le Bon, and was built out through a run of singles including "2468", "Julie", "Switch Over", and "Frontrunner". The New York Times critic Lindsay Zoladz called it one of the best albums of 2025, a pretty strong signal that Horsegirl are no longer just a promising young band but something genuinely worth paying attention to.
