About
Joshua Burnside makes the kind of music that refuses to sit still in one genre. The Belfast based Northern Irish songwriter blends Irish and Scottish folk with Americana, electronica, world music, and sound collage into something distinctly his own. His debut album Ephrata was written in Colombia and weaves in Cumbian rhythms alongside lyrics that reference Colombian figures like journalist Jaime Garzón. It won the Northern Ireland Music Prize Best Album in 2017, and comparisons to Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, and Tom Waits have followed him ever since. BBC 6 Music picked up on Burnside early, with presenters like Lauren Laverne, Guy Garvey, and Steve Lamacq all giving his singles airtime. He has played festivals from South by Southwest to Other Voices and Reeperbahn, and his track Holllllogram caught the ear of NPR ahead of his first US dates. In 2018 he served as Artist in Residence at the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, sharing stages with Shirley Collins and This Is the Kit among others.
