About
Saxophonist Kika Sprangers keeps this quintet small and close, built around melancholy tones and compositions that tell stories. Her music for the group circles around rivers as a metaphor for a human life, the way it flows, wanders, meanders or sometimes churns hard. It's played acoustically, with a Wurlitzer and the human voice working as an instrument alongside the sax. The sound leans on the blend of Anna Serierse's voice and Sprangers' saxophone, which is easy to pick out once you've heard it. Koen Schalkwijk plays piano and Wurlitzer, William Barrett is on double bass and Wouter Kühne on drums, and each brings a strong musical personality that adds some friction to the ensemble playing. Sprangers has also won the Edison Nationaal with her Large Ensemble for (In)finity, written a North Sea Jazz commission for the Nederlands Kamerkoor, and released Morning on HUBRO Music with the international band Beiggja.
