About
Lawrence, the singular force behind Felt, Denim, and Mozart Estate, has spent decades making brilliantly idiosyncratic indie pop while commercial success kept a polite distance. As the sole constant member of Felt throughout the 1980s, he guided the band across ten albums before dissolving it in 1989. Denim followed, soaking up glam rock and bubblegum influences while a planned third album got shelved and a single was pulled from release in the wake of Princess Diana's death. Go Kart Mozart, later renamed Mozart Estate, has been his vehicle since 1999, with the 2005 record cheekily titled Tearing Up the Album Chart. A documentary by Paul Kelly, Lawrence of Belgravia, tracked the making of his 2012 album On the Hot Dog Streets and caught a man navigating homelessness with his cult status intact. Most recently Mozart Estate put out Tower Block in a Jam Jar in 2025.
