With over 16 million records sold worldwide, Loreena McKennitt has built one of the most distinctive sounds in Celtic and world music, weaving together folk, Middle Eastern textures, and her famously clear soprano voice into something that sits comfortably in no single genre. She runs everything through her own label, Quinlan Road, which has given her the creative freedom to set Alfred Tennyson poems to music and score Disney animated films in the same career arc. Her single "The Mummers' Dance" became a genuine radio hit in 1997, while deeper cuts like "The Bonny Swans" and "Penelope's Song" reward the kind of patient listening she clearly expects from her audience. After a years long hiatus following a personal tragedy in 1998, she returned with An Ancient Muse in 2006 and has kept recording steadily since, including a live album recorded at the Alhambra in Granada and a studio set of traditional Celtic songs captured at the Sharon Temple in Ontario.
