Wolfgang Van Halen named his band after the early incarnation of his father's group, the one that eventually became Van Halen. That nod to history is fitting, because Mammoth carries a serious family weight while deliberately carving out its own sound. Wolfgang played every instrument on the self titled debut, a choice he credited partly to Dave Grohl's early one man approach with Foo Fighters, and critics largely agreed the result stood on its own merits rather than just trading on a famous surname. Since expanding to a full live lineup, the band has moved at a steady pace. The debut was followed by Mammoth II in 2023, and The End arrived in 2025. Recent videos for tracks like "The Spell" and "Same Old Song" show the band keeping busy, and the hard rock sound stays rooted in the kind of energetic, guitar forward territory you'd expect, without simply mimicking the Van Halen blueprint.
