Few artists can claim they helped reshape an entire genre, but Maxwell is genuinely one of them. Alongside D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and Erykah Badu, the Brooklyn born singer brought neo soul to mainstream ears in the late 1990s, starting with his debut Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite in 1996. That record spent 78 weeks on the Billboard 200 and drew comparisons to Prince from Vibe magazine, while singles like "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)" and "Sumthin' Sumthin'" became defining moments of the era. After an eight year absence, he came back with BLACKsummers'night in 2009, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and won two Grammy Awards including Best R&B Album. The single "Pretty Wings" landed a Song of the Year nomination. His fifth album blackSUMMERS'night followed in 2016, with "Lake by the Ocean" continuing his run of lush, unhurried soul.
