About
Mental Cruelty started out as a straight deathcore outfit and slowly grew into something far more theatrical. Since A Hill to Die Upon in 2021, the German band has leaned into symphonic black metal and blackened death metal, with guitarist Marvin Kessler pointing to Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Lorna Shore and Fleshgod Apocalypse as touchstones. The band came together in Karlsruhe in 2014 and worked its way up from the 2015 demo Sickening World, through the Pereat Mundus EP, to a run of albums that includes Purgatorium, Inferis and Zwielicht. Along the way they moved from Rising Nemesis to Unique Leader and then Century Media Records. A big shift came in 2023, when Lukas Nicolai of Sun Eater took over on vocals ahead of Zwielicht. The band has also stretched that album out with orchestral, instrumental and piano reworked versions of its tracks, and Echoes of a Forlorn Land followed in 2026.
