About
Mercury Rev have spent decades crafting one of rock's most gloriously unclassifiable sounds, blending psychedelic rock, noise, indie rock, American roots and ambient into something that defies easy labeling. Formed in 1989 at the University at Buffalo, the band built their early reputation on gloriously chaotic live shows, with Pitchfork once describing their formative years as sounding like "a careening bus headed towards a fiery crash." Constant members Jonathan Donahue and Sean "Grasshopper" Mackowiak have been the creative core throughout, steering the band through numerous lineup changes. Their 1991 debut Yerself Is Steam began life as improvised scores for student films and nature documentaries, setting the tone for a career full of cinematic ambition. The band have long been linked to The Flaming Lips, with Donahue having played guitar for that band before returning full time to Mercury Rev. The 1998 album Deserter's Songs marked their international breakthrough, bringing their neo psychedelic, orchestral vision to a much wider audience.
