About
Puerto Rican alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón has built one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz by rooting his music firmly in the sounds of his home island. His album Jíbaro drew on the folk music of rural Puerto Rico, while Esta Plena tackled Plena rhythms and earned two Grammy nominations, with Zenón stepping up as lyricist and vocalist alongside his core quartet. That quartet, anchored since 2005 by drummer Henry Cole, has been the main vehicle for his compositions across a string of releases on Marsalis Music and Fresh Sound New Talent. Beyond recording, Zenón is a MacArthur Fellow and Guggenheim Fellow, and he teaches at institutions including the New England Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music. He also founded Caravana Cultural, a project that brings free jazz concerts to rural communities in Puerto Rico, pairing live performances with presentations on improvisation and jazz history. As a sideman he has appeared on well over 100 recordings, working alongside names like Charlie Haden, Fred Hersch, Steve Coleman, and Danilo Pérez.
