Motor City Drum Ensemble, the alias of German producer and DJ Danilo Plessow, sits at a rich crossroads of Detroit soul, 70s jazz, and classic hip hop. The name itself is a sly double reference: a nod to his Detroit musical heroes like Moodymann and early J Dilla, and a wink at Stuttgart, the car manufacturing city near where he grew up, tied together with his love of drum machines. His Raw Cuts series built his reputation, and he has released singles and remixes across more than twenty record labels. Plessow has co founded several labels, including MCDE Recordings, Four Roses Recordings, and Space Grape Records, the last of which focuses on live contemporary music and has involved musicians from Kyoto Jazz Massive. Beyond the studio, he has been a regular behind the decks at clubs and festivals worldwide, served as a radio presenter for Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM, and curated the Nuits Sonores festival in Lyon. He also records under other aliases including Vermont and Inverse Cinematics.
