Kenny Dixon Jr. runs Detroit's house and techno scene on his own terms. Operating through his own labels, KDJ Records and Mahogani Music, he has built a catalog that stretches from his 1997 debut Silentintroduction through to Taken Away in 2020, consistently blending deep house, techno, soul, and spoken word into something that feels entirely his own. His sample heavy productions pull from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Chic, and his 1997 track "I Can't Kick This Feeling When It Hits" remains a landmark, built around a Chic disco sample that hits every time. Beyond records, Moodymann keeps Detroit's roller skating culture alive through Soul Skate, a Memorial Day party he has hosted since 2007 that pulls in DJs playing house, funk, and hip hop. He even made it into Grand Theft Auto Online in 2020 as a fictional version of himself, spinning sets at the in game Music Locker club. As a member of the collective 3 Chairs alongside Theo Parrish, Marcellus Pittman, and Rick Wilhite, he stays rooted in Detroit's underground while his influence spreads well beyond it.
