About
Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp, the Swiss avant garde collective led by double bassist and composer Vincent Bertholet, resists easy categorisation. The group moves freely between introverted pop, free jazz, afrofunk and post punk, pulling all of it together into something that manages to be both cerebral and genuinely danceable. Their sixth album, Ventre Unique, released on the Bongo Joe label, showcases the full breadth of their palette: strings, guitars, horns, bongos and marimbas all feed into songs that shift from minimalist grooves and krautrock inflections toward Fela Kuti style sonic eruptions. At 14 members strong, OTPMD is the kind of ensemble whose recorded work only hints at what they can do when gathered on a stage.
