About

Also known as: Paul Henri de Leeuw

Paul de Leeuw is probably best known outside the Netherlands for the chaos he unleashed at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006, when instead of simply reading out the Dutch televote he handed his mobile number to presenter Sakis Rouvas on live TV and riffed freely until the BBC's Terry Wogan memorably called him an "eejit". Back home though, he had been a fixture on Dutch television since the late eighties, building a reputation through sharp satire, taboo subject matter and a willingness to go further than most. Alongside his TV career, De Leeuw has released a string of hit singles in the Netherlands, with tracks like Vlieg met me mee, Ik wil niet dat je liegt and 'k Heb je lief all charting in the top three. His discography stretches across decades, from Voor u majesteit in 1991 through to Land van mij in 2016, sitting comfortably in the kleinkunst and nederpop worlds. He has also appeared in a fair number of Dutch films, including the 1995 comedy Filmpje, which was built around his own characters.
