One half of Orbital, the legendary British electronic duo, Paul Hartnoll spent the late 1980s and 1990s helping to define what rave and electronic dance music could sound like at its most ambitious. Orbital built a huge reputation on the strength of seven albums and live shows that were genuinely hard to top. When the duo split in 2004, Hartnoll took a deliberately different turn with his solo debut, The Ideal Condition, leaning into acoustic textures and working with an orchestra rather than reaching for the synths. Collaborators on that record included Robert Smith and Joseph Arthur. He has kept things varied since then. A second solo album, 8:58, arrived in 2015, and he contributed music to the video game Wipeout Pure and the film American Ultra. In 2018 he crafted an experimental track called Heartwork using real cyclist heartbeat data alongside sounds from his own bicycle. More recently he teamed up with poet Murray Lachlan Young for The Virus Diaries, a lockdown album released under the name Hartnoll and Young.
