About
Paula Cole went from stepping into Sinéad O'Connor's shoes on Peter Gabriel's Secret World Tour to winning the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1998. She only had one rehearsal before walking out in front of 16,000 people, and she ended up singing the Kate Bush part on "Don't Give Up" on the live album and video. Her breakout record This Fire came in 1996, self produced, and gave her "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?", a top ten hit, plus "I Don't Want to Wait", which many people know as the Dawson's Creek theme. That same year she became the first woman nominated for Producer of the Year without a male collaborator. She swerved hard on 1999's Amen, which cost her some fans, then moved through jazz influenced work like Courage and a return to folk rock on Ithaca. Her songs often take on social issues, from gender stereotypes to the Iraq war. Her latest album is Lo, from 2024, and she also teaches at Berklee.
