Charles Mingus called him "Young Django", and that nickname alone tells you a lot about what Philip Catherine brings to a guitar. The Belgian guitarist has built one of jazz's more quietly remarkable careers, moving fluidly between post bop, jazz fusion and straight ahead swing across more than five decades. He stepped in for Jan Akkerman in Focus, recorded with Mingus on Three or Four Shades of Blues, and toured briefly with Benny Goodman in the early 1980s. Catherine has always thrived in close musical conversation: his duo recordings with Larry Coryell, his trio work with Chet Baker, and three albums alongside trumpeter Tom Harrell show a guitarist who listens as much as he leads. His 2005 collaboration Meeting Colours paired his compositions with Bert Joris arrangements performed by the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, and he has kept releasing records well into his seventies, including a solo guitar record, Guitars Two, and the celebratory live set 75 Live at Flagey.
