About
Pink Martini describes itself as a little orchestra, and that framing captures them perfectly. Founded in Portland, Oregon in 1994 by pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the band blends classical, Latin, jazz, and traditional pop into something that feels genuinely singular. Co lead vocalist China Forbes is monolingual in everyday life yet sings in 15 languages, and that kind of reach defines the band's whole spirit. Their debut single "Sympathique" landed a Song of the Year nomination at France's Victoires de la Musique, and all five of their early albums went gold in France, Canada, Greece, and Turkey, with over 2.5 million copies sold worldwide. Live, Pink Martini operates on a grand scale, performing with more than 50 orchestras globally, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and the BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall. They played Carnegie Hall twice, opened the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and their 1969 collaboration with Japanese singer Saori Yuki hit platinum in Japan and reached number two on the charts there. Both the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame inducted them in their twentieth year.
