PJ Morton wears a lot of hats without losing his footing in any of them. The New Orleans born soul artist is probably best known to casual listeners as a keyboardist and backing vocalist in Maroon 5, a role he stepped into in 2010 and made official two years later. But his solo catalog is where things get really interesting. His 2017 album Gumbo, self released on his own Morton Recordings label, drew comparisons to classic soul and earned him two Grammy nominations. He described the record as a mix of everything, much like the dish itself, touching on social tension and division in America. Since then Morton has kept expanding his range. His sixth album Paul landed in 2019, followed by a gospel project, Gospel According to PJ, in 2020, featuring heavyweights like The Clark Sisters and Yolanda Adams. The Piano Album, recorded live, came out the same year. He has also written and produced for artists including India.Arie, Monica, and Heather Headley, and contributed to the Slumdog Millionaire composer AR Rahman's work on the film Couples Retreat.
