About

Ragnhild Hemsing is a Norwegian violinist who moves fluidly between classical concert halls and the folk traditions of her home region, Valdres. She plays a 1694 Francesco Ruggeri violin on loan from the Dextra Musica Foundation, and that instrument has taken her to stages ranging from the Wigmore Hall and the Verbier Festival to the Førde International World Music Festival, where folk and classical programmes sit side by side. She has performed with major orchestras across Norway, as well as the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and others, and she appeared at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Her discography reflects the same range. The album YR leaned into Norwegian folk sounds, while Northern Timbre with pianist Tor Espen Aspaas took a more intimate chamber direction. More recently she released Røta on Berlin Classics in 2021, Peer Gynt with the Trondheim Soloists in 2022, and BRUCH+TVEITT in 2023, pairing Max Bruch with the Norwegian composer Geirr Tveitt. That same year she put out Vetra: my Norwegian winter, keeping her focus firmly on music rooted in Norwegian identity.
