About
René Jacobs built his reputation first as one of the finest countertenors of his generation, recording a wealth of lesser known Baroque repertoire by composers like Cesti, Marenzio and William Lawes, and lending his voice to landmark Bach recordings under Leonhardt and Herreweghe. That foundation as a singer clearly shaped the way he later approached directing: he is particularly praised as a conductor who understands singers, with a sharp feel for how recitative should breathe and move. In 1977 he founded Concerto Vocale, and his conducting career gradually took over. His recording of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro swept up an extraordinary string of honours, including a Grammy for Best Opera Recording and Gramophone's Record of the Year. Handel's Rinaldo, Haydn's The Seasons and Mozart's The Magic Flute all brought further major prizes. For nearly two decades he led the opera programme at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, cementing his place as one of the most distinctive interpreters of Baroque and Classical opera around.
