Few rock bands have pushed their instruments as hard or as thoughtfully as Rush. The Canadian power trio built a reputation on staggering musicianship, with Geddy Lee's piercing vocals and bass, Alex Lifeson's guitar work, and Neil Peart's drumming regularly topping magazine polls for their respective instruments. Their sound shifted dramatically over the decades, starting from a blues heavy hard rock rooted in Led Zeppelin worship, moving into intricate progressive rock territory, then leaning heavily on synthesizers through the 1980s before circling back to guitar driven rock in their later years. Peart, who joined in 1974, also became the band's primary lyricist, steering their themes toward science fiction, fantasy, and philosophy. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Rush sold over 42 million albums worldwide and earned induction into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They racked up 14 platinum and 3 multi platinum albums in the US alone. The band went quiet after Peart retired in 2015, and his death in 2020 seemed to close the book entirely, until Lee and Lifeson announced a reunion tour with drummer Anika Nilles stepping in.
