Sonata Arctica built their sound around big keyboard melodies, clean vocals that swing between falsetto and tenor, and an unmistakable rhythmic drive shared between bass and guitar. Coming out of Kemi in northern Finland, they started life as a hard rock band called Tricky Beans before power metal took over entirely. The name itself says it all: "sonata" for the music, "arctica" for where they come from. Their debut Ecliptica landed in 1999 and made waves across the power metal world, but many fans still point to the second album Silence as their finest hour. Early on they toured with Stratovarius and later opened for Iron Maiden in Japan, which tells you a lot about the company they were keeping. By 2024 they had eleven studio albums to their name, the most recent being Clear Cold Beyond, released that same year on Atomic Fire Records.
