About
Born in Zimbabwe and based in Amsterdam, State OFFF is a DJ and producer whose sound pulls from an unusually wide spread of global club music: baile funk from São Paulo, Baltimore club, London bass, and gqom, the raw syncopated dance style that came out of Durban. His debut EP GQOM TODAY, released in 2022, introduced those influences in production form, and live appearances at events like Lente Kabinet Festival, Nyege Nyege, and Liquid Room in Edinburgh have steadily built his reputation across the international club circuit. Beyond DJing and producing, he has developed an audiovisual performance called Umzimba, which pushes into more conceptual territory. Heavy percussion from live hardware sequencers feeds into a language model that converts sound into visuals, with the piece exploring what he describes as a ghost experience of a body under strain, sweat, fatigue and exhaustion rendered without any physical body present. The outcome is a conversation between analogue rhythm and digital intelligence, where sound becomes image and rhythm breaks into fragmented, poetic language.
