About

Stéphane Denève is the kind of conductor who builds things. The French maestro from Tourcoing has held music directorships on both sides of the Atlantic, shaping orchestras rather than just passing through them. He spent years at the helm of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, then moved on to lead the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra through its final chapter before its merger, and served as music director of the Brussels Philharmonic, where he launched the Centre for Future Orchestral Repertoire to bring new compositions into the world. Since the 2019 to 2020 season he has been music director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, with his contract running through 2026. His recording catalogue leans toward French repertoire, with notable releases of works by Albert Roussel and Guillaume Connesson on Naxos and Chandos. He made his US conducting debut at Santa Fe Opera with Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmelites and later served as principal guest conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is also artistic director of the New World Symphony, a role he took on in 2022.
