Born Gordon Sumner in Wallsend, England, Sting picked up his nickname because of a black and yellow striped jumper that made his bandmates think of a wasp. As frontman, bassist, and main songwriter for the Police from 1977 to 1984, he helped shape some of the most enduring songs of the era, including "Every Breath You Take" and "Roxanne", both of which landed on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The band scored five UK number one albums before Sting set out on his own. His solo work pulled in jazz, reggae, classical, and worldbeat, a notably different direction from the Police's punk tinged reggae rock. Albums like The Dream of the Blue Turtles and Nothing Like the Sun showed a more ambitious, genre blending side. Across his career as a solo artist and with the Police, he has sold over 100 million records and collected 17 Grammy Awards. Shape of My Heart and Fields of Gold remain fan favourites that still get a lot of attention.
