About
Tank and the Bangas are a New Orleans outfit whose sound refuses to sit still, pulling from funk, soul, hip hop, rock, spoken word, gospel, folk, and what vocalist Tarriona "Tank" Ball's bandmate once called "Soulful Disney." That restless energy caught the attention of NPR in 2017, when their performance of "Quick" won the Tiny Desk Contest, with Phish's Trey Anastasio calling Tank "a force of nature." Their song "Oh Heart" landed on BoJack Horseman, and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist followed in 2020. The group formed in 2011 after meeting at a New Orleans open mic night, and they have since put out four studio albums. Their 2024 release, The Heart, The Mind, The Soul, earned them their first Grammy win, taking home Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. As one critic put it, "It's New Orleans but it's New Orleans now," which sums them up pretty well.
