Testament are one of the heaviest hitters to come out of the Bay Area thrash scene, part of what fans call the Big Six of Bay Area thrash alongside Exodus, Death Angel and others. Formed in 1983 under the name Legacy, they hit their stride fast: the debut album The Legacy landed in 1987 and comparisons to Metallica followed almost immediately. Their first three records cemented a reputation for punishing riffs and Chuck Billy's commanding vocals, and Practice What You Preach cracked the Billboard Top 100 in 1989. Despite a revolving door of lineup changes through the nineties and a serious cancer diagnosis for Billy in 2001, the band never really went away. Skolnick and bassist Steve Di Giorgio eventually settled back in permanently, and Testament came roaring back with The Formation of Damnation in 2008, kicking off a run of albums that all hit the Billboard Top 100. Their fourteenth studio album Para Bellum dropped in October 2025, proof that after four decades they still have no interest in slowing down.
