Few bands defined the raw, bluesy edge of the British Invasion quite like The Animals. Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1962 around singer Eric Burdon, guitarist Hilton Valentine, bassist Chas Chandler, keyboardist Alan Price, and drummer John Steel, they built their sound on hard rhythm and blues, covering John Lee Hooker, Nina Simone, and Sam Cooke with a grit that set them apart from their contemporaries. Their breakthrough came with "The House of the Rising Sun" in 1964, a transatlantic number one that blended Burdon's raw vocals with Price's haunting organ work into what some consider the first folk rock hit. The hits kept coming with "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", and "It's My Life", racking up 10 top 20 singles on both the UK and US charts. After the original lineup dissolved in 1966, Burdon took the project to California under the Eric Burdon and the Animals name, pivoting toward psychedelic and progressive rock with tracks like "San Franciscan Nights" and "Sky Pilot". The original five reunited twice for albums in the mid 1970s and again in 1983, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
