About
Rotterdam's The Kik built their reputation on a love of 1960s beat music, playing it with Dutch lyrics at a time when that felt genuinely fresh. Their 2012 debut Springlevend got people talking straight away, with De Telegraaf raving about their "authentic sounding Beatles beats" and de Volkskrant noting the humorous, upbeat songs, a lot of them about girls. One standout was their Dutch reworking of The Monkees' Pleasant Valley Sunday. The band also served as house band for the popular Dutch talk show De Wereld Draait Door. Over the years The Kik have kept expanding their sound beyond pure Nederbeat. They collaborated with veteran Dutch singer Armand, paid tribute to Boudewijn de Groot by performing his albums Voor de Overlevenden and Picknick in full with an orchestra, and in 2020 released Jin. Their song Angela was picked as a TopSong by NPO Radio 2 in May 2020. By 2024 they were venturing into the Dutch levenslied genre with the album Bal Populaire.
