About

Also known as: Turin Breakes, Turin Breaks, Turn Brakes

Turin Brakes have built a quietly devoted following since forming in Balham, London, in 1999, selling around a million records worldwide on the strength of their warm, acoustic leaning indie folk sound. The duo at the core, Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, broke through with their debut The Optimist LP, which picked up a Mercury Prize nomination and went Gold in the UK. Their second album, Ether Song, pushed things in a fuller, rockier direction and gave them their biggest moment: the top 5 single "Painkiller (Summer Rain)" in 2003. Third album Jackinabox went even further stylistically, folding in folk, funk and bossa nova, and still hit the UK Albums Chart top 10 despite getting little radio support. They were also part of the Band Aid 20 ensemble for the 2004 charity single, which gave them their only chart topper. Long term live collaborators Rob Allum and Eddie Myer became official band members in 2013, and the band has continued releasing records on Cooking Vinyl, including Wide eyed Nowhere in 2022 and Spacehopper in 2025.
