About
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats came out of Cambridge with a sound that feels like heavy metal's darkest early years filtered through a haze of fuzz and occult paranoia. Formed by Kevin Starrs in 2009, the band leans hard into vintage instruments and old recording gear to conjure something that sounds genuinely unearthed rather than retro. Their label Metal Blade once summed them up as the original Alice Cooper band jamming in a cell with early Black Sabbath and the Stooges, and that about covers it. Breakthrough album Blood Lust earned the band a devoted cult following in doom circles, with critics praising its mix of psychedelic comedowns, garage nihilism and occult metal bruising. Third album Mind Control pushed things further as a full concept piece about a cult leader brainwashing desert disciples through drugs and violence, pulling in more 1970s pop textures alongside the trademark riffs. Six studio albums deep now, with Nell' Ora Blu arriving in 2024, the band continues to be a fixture at major European festivals.
