Wunderhorse started as a solo lockdown project for Jacob Slater, a frontman who had already burned through one band, the punk trio Dead Pretties, before decamping to Newquay to surf, do labourer work, and keep writing songs. He also picked up an acting gig in there, playing Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook in Danny Boyle's miniseries Pistol. The full band came together in 2021, drawing influences from Neil Young, Elliott Smith and Morphine into a sound that critics called some of the most well crafted rock of the decade. Their 2022 debut Cub landed on best of year lists at NME and Far Out, a blues tinged garage rock record best played loud. The follow up Midas arrived in 2024, produced by Craig Silvey, hit number 6 on the UK Albums Chart, and showed the band stepping up in scope. More recently, the single The Rope went to number 1 on the UK Official Singles Sales chart, cementing Wunderhorse as one of the more compelling rock acts to come out of Britain in recent years.
