About
Alan Gilbert made history as the first New York City born conductor to lead the New York Philharmonic, taking the helm in 2009 and steering the orchestra toward contemporary and American repertoire after a run of more conservative predecessors. He launched CONTACT, the Philharmonic's new music series, and brought in composers and artists to shake up the programming during his tenure through 2017. Before that, he spent years building his reputation at Santa Fe Opera, where he became the company's first ever music director in 2003. These days Gilbert keeps a busy international schedule as principal conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, a post he holds through 2029, and as music director of the Royal Swedish Opera. He also holds the William Schuman chair in Musical Studies at the Juilliard School, where he leads master classes in coaching, conducting, and performance. He is equally at home with a violin in hand as he is on the podium.
