Alien Ant Farm built their reputation on a killer instinct for covers and a scrappy, hard edged sound that sits somewhere between nu metal and alternative rock. Their version of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" hit number one on the US Modern Rock charts in 2001, topped the charts in Australia, reached number three in the UK, and landed on the soundtrack of American Pie 2, making it one of the most recognizable rock covers of its era. The music video loaded up on Jackson homages while keeping the band's own grimy, backyard energy front and centre. Their platinum album ANThology put them firmly on the map, and their follow up TruANT, produced by Stone Temple Pilots brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo, showed they could hold their own in serious company. The road has not always been smooth, including a 2002 bus accident in Spain that left singer Dryden Mitchell with a fractured vertebra, but the band has kept going. They released their sixth studio album Mantras in early 2024, proving there is still plenty left in the tank.
