About
BJ Baartmans is a singer songwriter and guitarist from Boxmeer who has been writing songs since his teens, first for the bands he played guitar in, in both English and Dutch. He only started singing them himself around thirty, and debuted in 1998 with the album The Pawnshop Guitar Chase. By 2005 his storytelling songs had shifted into the Dutch repertoire he is known for now. He has put out around sixteen albums under his own name, as BJ's Pawnshop, or with his band BJ's Wild Verband/Verwant. His guitar playing blends blues, folk, jazz and country without being precious about any of them, with fingerpicking, colourful chords and slide licks, always serving the song. Names like Ry Cooder, Buddy Miller, Bill Frisell and David Lindley come up as comparisons. He also plays mandolin, mandocello, resonator, lap steel, banjo, bouzouki and bass, which makes him a sought after session player. As a producer he has worked on records for Iain Matthews, Jack Poels, Jeff Finlin, Frans Pollux and Marisa Yeaman, often at his own Studio Wild Verband.
