Gerard van Maasakkers, born in 1949 and rooted in Brabant, has spent decades on stage as a singer and songwriter whose personal, intimate songs connect across generations. He has won the Annie M.G. Schmidt Prize twice, one of the more meaningful recognitions in Dutch songwriting, and marked his 75th birthday with the anniversary programme In de Gloria. His work has made him one of the most warmly regarded voices to come out of the southern Netherlands. These days he performs solo, just him and a guitar, stripping everything back to the essentials: a good song and an honest story. De Volkskrant noted that he manages to create an extraordinarily warm atmosphere with his audience even in the most understated of settings, and Theaterkrant described his show as a contented, good humoured look back at a rich career.
