About
Black Sea Dahu takes its name from two genuinely strange sources: a line about an 'open black sea' from their own song 'White Creatures', and the Dahu, a mythical goat like creature from Swiss and French folklore. That kind of poetic, world building sensibility runs through everything the Zürich group does. Fronted by singer songwriter Janine Cathrein and rounded out by her siblings and a circle of close friends, the seven piece plays something that sits between contemporary folk and indie pop, warm and intimate but with real texture. They started out as Josh back in 2012, then relaunched as Black Sea Dahu in 2018 with the debut album White Creatures, recorded in Norway and welcomed with strong reviews internationally. The 2019 EP No Fire in the Sand, featuring the single 'How You Swallowed Your Anger', deepened that reputation. Their second album I Am My Mother followed in February 2022 to similarly warm reception, and the band picked up the Swiss Music Awards Artist Award in 2019.
