About
Also known as: Emilie Welti, Émilie Jeanne-Sophie Welti
Sophie Hunger is the stage name of Émilie Jeanne Sophie Welti, a Swiss singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist and film composer based in Berlin. She writes and performs in English, French, German, Swiss German and Swiss Italian, a range that hints at the genre blending that defines her work. She plays guitar, blues harp and piano, and her catalogue moves fluidly between folk, jazz, rock, chanson and, more recently, synthesizer driven electronic pop. Her breakthrough came with the album 1983, which earned her the distinction of being the first Swiss artist to play the John Peel stage at Glastonbury. Her cover of Noir Désir's "Le vent nous portera" landed in the film Café de Flore, widening her audience considerably. She has since composed film soundtracks, appeared on Steven Wilson's To the Bone, and joined a Swiss supergroup with Faber and Dino Brandão for the Swiss German love song album Ich liebe Dich. Her 2020 album Halluzinationen was recorded in just two days at Abbey Road Studios.
