CAKE built their sound around a combination that should not work on paper: deadpan vocals, a trumpet front and center, and lyrics dripping with dry sarcasm. The Sacramento band pulled from norteño, mariachi, funk, country, disco, and hip hop, and somehow made it all feel coherent. Their breakthrough came with 1996's Fashion Nugget, which went platinum on the back of "The Distance", and they followed that up with another platinum record in Prolonging the Magic, which gave them their first number one Modern Rock single with "Never There". Showroom of Compassion in 2011 debuted at the top of the Billboard charts, the first time any of their albums hit that mark. Singer John McCrea and trumpeter Vince DiFiore have been the constant core through every lineup shuffle since the band formed in 1991. That trumpet is not decoration either; it is woven into the DNA of the band's arrangements and gives them an instantly recognizable sound that sets them apart from just about every other act in alternative rock.
