About
China Crisis built their reputation on a quietly distinctive blend of new wave atmospherics and synth pop polish, and by the mid 1980s they had racked up ten UK top 50 singles. The Kirkby duo at the heart of it all, Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon, started from a foundation of Brian Eno, Steely Dan and Talking Heads influences, then steadily pushed toward a warmer, more layered sound. Their second album, Working with Fire and Steel, introduced brass and woodwind alongside the synths, and the 1984 single "Wishful Thinking" became their biggest moment, peaking at number 9 in the UK and hitting number one on the Swedish chart Poporama. The follow up album Flaunt the Imperfection went top 10 in the UK, partly thanks to Steely Dan's Walter Becker producing, a collaboration the band valued so much they credited him as an official member. Singles like "Black Man Ray" and "King in a Catholic Style" kept them in the charts through 1985 and 1986. They have revisited some of their best known songs in recent years, with "Arizona Sky" and "Working with Fire and Steel" both surfacing on their YouTube channel.
