About
Also known as: Cory Thomas Hanson
Cory Hanson is probably best known as the frontman of the adventurous rock collective Wand, but his solo work goes somewhere quite different. Based in Los Angeles, he released his debut The Unborn Capitalist from Limbo in 2016 and has been building a body of work ever since that moves freely between dreamy folk, buzzing guitar excursions and something close to cinematic songwriting. Albums like Pale Horse Rider and Western Cum push into americana and psychedelic rock territory, swinging between hushed delicacy and raw, almost chaotic energy. His record Vertigo and the follow up I Love People pull those threads together, pairing warm melodies and layered arrangements with a sensibility that recalls the singer songwriters of the seventies while staying distinctly his own. Live, his voice rasps and floats at the same time, his guitar lines sprawl like dust clouds over open ground, and his band fills the space with a warmth that feels comforting and slightly unsettling in equal measure. He has a gift for making small details feel enormous and big emotions feel intimate.
