About
Kurt Vile built his reputation the slow way, starting with lo fi home recordings in Philadelphia and gradually assembling one of the most distinctive voices in indie rock and folk. His early albums, Constant Hitmaker and God Is Saying This to You, were collections of bedroom recordings dating back to 2003, but things shifted when he signed to Matador Records and dropped Childish Prodigy in 2009, his first proper studio album with his backing band the Violators. From there the records kept coming and kept getting bigger. Smoke Ring for My Halo in 2011 brought him a wider audience, and the single Pretty Pimpin from B'lieve I'm Goin Down topped the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart in 2016. He took a detour in 2017 with Lotta Sea Lice, a full collaborative album with Courtney Barnett, before returning to his home studio for (watch my moves) in 2022. His most recent album, Philadelphia's Been Good to Me, arrived in 2026, a title that feels like a fitting tribute from someone who has called that city home for most of his career.
