Few bands have left a mark on hard rock quite like Deep Purple. Formed in 1968, they were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as the loudest band on the planet after a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre, and they have since sold over 100 million records worldwide. Alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, they are widely seen as part of the holy trinity of British heavy rock, and a Planet Rock poll placed them fifth among the most influential bands ever. Their story is a tangled web of classic lineups, legendary albums and constant reinvention. The Mark II lineup, featuring Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice, produced stone cold classics like Machine Head and Made in Japan. Spinoff acts including Rainbow, Whitesnake and Gillan all grew out of former members. Deep Purple were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, and their catalog stretches from the crushing riff of Smoke on the Water to the more melodic Perfect Strangers.
