Few jazz pianists can claim they once toured with both Vinicius de Moraes and Antônio Carlos Jobim before even turning eighteen, but Eliane Elias did exactly that. Born in São Paulo, she moved to New York in 1981, joined the acclaimed group Steps Ahead, and steadily built one of the most distinctive careers in jazz, threading bossa nova warmth through her piano playing and, eventually, her voice. Her recordings for Blue Note, Concord, and others span decades and cover a remarkable range, from intimate Jobim tributes to full orchestral collaborations. She has won multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Latin Jazz Album for Made in Brazil, Dance of Time, and the 2021 record Mirror Mirror, the last of which featured fellow piano legends Chick Corea and Chucho Valdés. Her 2007 album Something for You hit No. 1 on the U.S. jazz charts, while Dreamer earned a Gold Disc in Japan and cracked the top five in both France and the U.S. Whether she is playing Jobim, covering the Doors, or collaborating with bassist and husband Marc Johnson, Elias brings a deep Brazilian sensibility to everything she touches.
