Frazey Ford has been quietly building one of the more distinctive voices in Canadian folk and soul since her time with the Be Good Tanyas, but it's her solo work that really shows what she can do. Her debut, Obadiah, named after her own middle name, drew comparisons to Ann Peebles, Roberta Flack, and Donny Hathaway, with reviewers noting the mellow neo soul groove and what one critic called "buttery vocals". That soulful, unhurried quality carried through to Indian Ocean in 2014 and then U Kin B the Sun in 2020, which rounded out a trio of records that sit somewhere between Americana, folk, and classic rhythm and blues. There's a warmth and specificity to her songwriting that sets her apart, rooted in the kind of detail that comes from genuine lived experience rather than genre exercise.
